Purchase Autographed Book

The year was 1957. Elvis Presley was on top of the world. Just twenty-two at the time, he was not just the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll but a handsome prince who had his choice of all the fair maidens in the land, and yet, like a true fairy tale, he fell in love with Anita Wood, a rising musical talent with the looks of a beauty queen. Anita put her own career aside to be with Elvis, her first love and his steady girlfriend for the next five years. ONCE UPON A TIME: ELVIS AND ANITA is a heartfelt memoir of Anita’s life with Elvis from 1957 through 1962. Written by Jonnita Brewer Barrett, Anita’s daughter, the book takes readers back to a magical time that many believe was among the best years of Elvis’ life: His career was taking off, he had just purchased Graceland (where Anita lived with Elvis for most of their time together), and life seemed incredibly good. Through her daughter, Anita recaptures the joy and excitement of two young people in love. She shares many key moments that bonded her with Elvis’ family, including the shocking news that he had been drafted by the Army in 1958, and the devastation he felt later that year by the sudden death of his beloved mother, Gladys. ONCE UPON A TIME traces Anita’s own journey in show business which included appearances with such entertainment legends as Jack Paar, Buddy Hackett, Andy Williams and Dick Van Dyke. But it also revisits some of the most painful memories of Anita’s life, from the lengths that Elvis’ manager took to shield their relationship from the public, to the heartache and betrayal that made her realize that the fairy tale had to end.

Could you please tell me the price of the book to send to Emgland? Thank you!

    • jbarrett6 on said:

Hi, the price is the same as in the USA $26.99 but I’m sorry to say the shipping is much more. It cost me a little over $14 actual postage plus more for packing materials so I have to charge $15 for shipping. I hate that the shipping is so much. It may be available on Amazon over there for less shipping. Thank you for asking.

Very happy to see you found the videos I posted of your mom’s recordings of “Crying in the Chapel”/”I’m Liking This” on youtube–I have other 45s of your moms–just have to make more videos! (fortheloveofivy84) Excited about the book!

    • jbarrett6 on said:

Thank you for posting on youtube! As you may know, Moma didn’t keep hardly anything so I didn’t have copies of all her songs. It is great to be able to hear them!

Hi, I have been an avid collector of Elvis books for many years and have well over 150 in my collection now. My favorites are those written by people he was close to. I have been waiting for years for you to write a book and can’t wait to receive it. Thank you so much for sharing your memories. At the time did you know that it was a very special time in the history of music? And, I have always wondered what Gladys was really like. Do you say in the book weather she was sweet and passive or more aggressive as far as Elvis was concerned? Roland Janes from Sun Studio is our Recording Engineer and a dear friend and I keep meaning to ask him if you attended any of Elvis’ recording sessions but I forget when we’re working, so I guess I will ask you. Were you ever there? Thank you. I am looking forward to reading your book.

    • jbarrett6 on said:

      Loretta,
Thank you so much, Moma and I are so honored to be added to your collection. At the time, Mom didn’t know that it was such a special time in music history or she would have kept more mementos, to my mom it was just her life and her first love. Moma loved Gladys very much and I think you may see a little different side of her in the book. I am convinced that if Gladys had lived, life for Elvis would have been different, but who knows, it was just not in God’s plan. Mom did not attend any of Elvis’ recording sessions, but she was with him when he would play demos and ask for her input.

  16. I am interested in purchasing a copy of this book. Two questions, can I get you & our mom to sign it for me? Secondly, would it be possible to have booked shipped padded and in a box? The postal service has been cruel to books shipped in padded envelopes alone and I don’t want anything to happen to this one. Thanks, looking forward to reading!

    • Your mom that is :-)

      • jbarrett6 on said:

        Hi James,

Yes, Mom and I will sign your book. Thanks!

        • I just placed my order for a signed copy, thank you so much. Is it possible to ship the book in a box? Books shipped in padded envelopes tend to get destroyed in transit. Let me know if you require additional funds for shipping (padded & in a box). Thanks!

          • jbarrett6 on said:

Hi James, I put the book in a plastic bag then wrap twice in cardboard and so far have gotten really good results. I have sent your book and hopefully it will reach you in great shape. Let me know. :)

Hello Anita and Jonnita. I purchased the book two weeks ago and just finished reading it. For the record, it is a great book and I truly enjoyed reading about Anita’s life with Elvis during their time together. My only regret is that I ordered the book from Barnes and Noble and did not know I could have had it personally signed by the two of you if I had purchased the book from this site. Anita, I’m glad you and Jonnita were able to come together to write this book. What an honor it must be to write some of the “real stories” about Elvis during your time together. There are so many books written about Elvis that you don’t know what to believe!

Anita, may God continue to Bless you and your family as you seemed to have lived a good life.

Can I still purchase a signed copy?

  21. I just ordered an autographed copy of this book. I would like if both lovely ladies could sign it please. I can’t wait to start reading this, drjohncarpenter talked me into buying this. ;-) What a classy lady Anita has been and still is. I think she was the most beautiful woman Elvis ever dated. May God bless Anita and her wonderful family.

  23. Can I still purchase the book from your site ?

    • jbarrett6 on said:

      Hi Lou,

Yes, you can still order from our site. It may take a little longer to get your autographed book because I travel a lot and I have to meet with Moma to get them signed. But yes, I will send it out.

      Thanks,
      Jonnita
